Fishing Mania

Today 23.2.2010, I had just helped make Dayna into a  sand mermaid when I looked up and saw Jamil fishing in the water trough  he was catching some serious sharks and whale as well,.  I looked a little further along and saw that Max was in a speed boat zooming across the ocean to his favourite fishing spot and Flynn was on a great big fishing ship (outside big box).  He too was off to spot large fish .   Axel was tap tapping a portrait of a man fishing with incredible detail.....While Makenna was swimming throughout the Kindy being an actual Mermaid...........  WOW!!!!!!, could the children’s learning become more meaningful and connected I asked myself?.  Aparently It can.. I walked inside to tell Corina this amazing observation but she was up to her elbows in books about fish species and habitats, it seems Brayden and his buddy Meg had moved from the outside water fishing to inside the Kindy to investigate and research further into what kinds of food whales and dolphins eat.  I turned to our hot glue gun area and saw Babu constructing his very own fishing rod complete with useable reel, reel handle rod eyes which vary in size from large to small at the rod tip, right down to the hook and attatched fish.  He then went onto the mat to try his rod out when Makenna the mermaid burst inside and leapt onto his fish and hook.  Babu begin to wind in the catch of the day....  Mermaid fillets..  I think not...  I was completely amazed how the children were using the entire kindy to explore their interest in fishing and fish, that I took one more peek outside to see that Max had picked up a few friends Preston and Jacob.  Preston was being rescued at the time because he had just fallen out of the speeding boat and that Moses the blue shark was going to eat him, however Moses was being hauled in by Grandpa Gary’s long line........

Phew!!!!!
Busy busy hunters, gatherers and researchers!!!

Fishing and boating mania led to pirate mania!!!

Lots of dramatic play, face painting, treasure map drawing and treasure hunting.
